Hello My Dear Brothers,
It is a great joy to write this report to tell about the great things the Lord has been doing in this time. I hope that our Lord finds you growing more and more in the knowledge of God and the One He sent, Jesus Christ and that you are abounbing in grace and mercy. May the peace of the Lord be with you.
We are studying in an exegetical way the book of Ephesians on Saturday night. We are now in chapter 4 seeing the practical importance of the doctrine which were exposed to in chapters 1 through 3. Eder M. and Junior C., two young men who are serving the Lord along with us, are teaching too. Both of them have been greatly gifted by the Holy Spirit and it is a great privilege to see them growing in spiritual knowledge and wisdom. They are a great encouragement not only for me but for the congregation too and at the same time a good example of the work of the Lord. We praise the Lord for them and pray that God would continue to use them to take the Gospel to the end of this age.
We are rejoicing in the Lord because of loved and precious brothers who were brought to our congregation by Him. Jonnathan and his wife Cintia came 6 months ago and it has been a beautiful gift to see them grow and persevere in the Lord during this time. He came on a Saturday night and I remember I was preaching on Hebrews 11 about faith. After service, he and I were talking about sin, repentance and faith and he confessed to the Lord about his life of sin and he and his wife have persevered from that day on. His wife was pregnant at the time they came and now they have a precious baby. Jonnathan was attending a so called Christian community named “Agua Viva” where Christ is not honored but he obtained mercy from the Lord.
Christian and his wife Kristen came 1 month ago. They were attending a congregation here in Lima, but they realized the Gospel was not being preached in a correct way and the preaching was not solid. Christian came on a Saturday night and after the service we were talking about doctrine and especially about the Gospel. The Lord was working in leading him to read the Puritans and some Baptists such as Spurgeon and Arthur W. Pink and he realized the doctrines which were preached by all these men were not being preached in his congregation and especially that the true Gospel was not being preached. Decisionism is so common among evangelicals. He knew about our Church in Barranco through our web page and when he came he realized it was the same place he visited a few years ago when Paul Washer was giving a conference. His wife is pregnant too and we praise the Lord for their lives.
There was a conference from the 2nd through the 5th of November and our brother James R. White was teaching about different topics such as Justification, Sola Scriptura, Plurality of Elders, and the Doctrines of Grace. It was a tremendous privilege and a great blessing for all the people of God here in Peru and even for people from other places who came to hear the Word of God. There was a group of good brothers from Bolivia, which is a small country in between Argentina and Peru. We rejoice in their visit and we were able to see the work of the Lord in their lives. I am astonished in seeing the great effort they made in coming from such a remote place and I glorify the Almighty.
Alfonso and I did the translating and it was a great intellectual effort but I rejoice that it was not done in an effort to please man, but as an effort to do the will of God from the heart. I am the smallest among the smallest, but my deepest desire was to glorify my Lord through this service and I am sharing this as a blessing, because it is a matter of great joy to me, especially seeing a small triumph over this terrible enemy, pride, and not because of our own efforts but by Christ. It always is a great battle in my life and in my heart and I felt the good hand of the Lord upon me during those days sustaining me and helping me to see that all that I am is because of Him. I felt great joy because my delight was in Him and my pride was not wrapped up in my fear of failure. The Lord gave me confidence not in my ability but in Him. All the praise be to the Lord forever and ever in the Church.
I was tremendously edified during this time especially hearing the teaching on justification by faith. God is the One who justifies and not on the basis of our own works but through faith in Christ. I learned a lot about the concept of justification among Roman Catholics. It is so sad to hear such a heretical teachings but it is the terrible situation of millions of people who are trusting on their own ability to please God. I praise the Lord because all this knowledge leads me to pray for my relatives who are attending Catholic services and to cry and weep in prayer before the Lord for Him to have mercy of them because they are so blind and ignorant about Jesus Christ and His perfect sacrifice. May the Lord continue using James to take the Truth of the Gospel until the end of this age. I began to teach through internet to a group of brothers from different places in Peru and from different countries all around the world. We are studying the book of Romans exegetically. We saw a great need among our brothers in Christ. Most of them are suffering because they have no church to attend where they live. It is so sad and it is a great burden in our hearts and at the same time something that moves us to cry out for the Lord to send laborers to His vineyard. Every Wednesday we are studying for one hour and a half this precious book. We pray for the Lord to use this letter to encourage His people to preach the Gospel and to live according to it. This book has been used by God to awake His Church and to revive His work throughout the Christian history and we trust in God’s power, because the Gospel is “power of God for salvation to all who believe”. We praise His Name and we hope the Lord will help us to take the Gospel to our brothers and sisters in Christ all around this world. We realize the task is extremely great and hard, but nothing is impossible for God and we trust in His Omnipotence and not in our weakness, in His ability and not in our weakness.
I was preaching on a church named I.E.P (Peruvian Evangelical Church) last October. I was invited by a deacon because it was an special time. I was preaching on John 3 about regeneration. There was a tremendous opposition but the Spirit sustained me and helped me during this time, He didn’t forsake me at any time, according to the promise of the Lord. Some of them were arguing against the doctrine of the Gospel but most of them were paying attention and receiving the Word with joy. I went through the text but among people who were interfering in the middle of the preaching. There were people who did not agree, but many brothers came to me and they began to ask a lot of questions about doctrine and the Lord was glorified and His Word exalted. A man told me it was the first time he had been awake, his heart was refreshed, the Word of the Lord came to him in the power of the Holy Spirit. His face was shining with joy and his tongue was glorifying God not me, he was not happy, but rejoicing, abounding in Christ and experiencing the joy that comes from the Lord. I pray for the Lord to continue persevering and preserving His work among this people and that He would continue giving to His Church pastors after His own heart, men with great zeal for Him whose hearts are burdened, being inflamed by the truth which is in Christ.
Praise be to the Lord for His amazing love toward us. I rejoice in Christ, not for His gifts but for the Gift, for Christ Himself. What great mercy we have received in Him!!
Our thanks to the people who support us through this ministry. May the Lord bless their lives.
In Jesus Name,
Walter I.
