Eastern Europe: Reports - Romania - Reports

Writing a monthly report gives me a great opportunity to look back and see better the hand of the Lord working providentially in our lives and my devotion for the cause of the Gospel. I began to regard this moment as a monthly "Ebenezer" that I wait with a certain eagerness.

February has been a fruitful month concerning the work for the Kingdom of God. In spite of the cold temperature, we were able to accomplish much that was on our agenda. Indeed, we had some really cold days. I struggle every morning to start the engine of my car and wait for a few minutes to warm it up. Those were "precious" minutes as I prayed and looked with anticipation to the next step. I noticed that the future absorbs me. My agenda is made for the next couple of months as I have to work all the time on new details. I am so involved that sometimes I feel I do not taste the present as I should. I also realized that what I should have in mind for the future above the events that I constantly plan and work on is the coming of Jesus. This fact motivated me to preach one message in our church in Brasov on this topic.

During February I took two major trips. The first one was in my home city. It was the first time since we were married last year in June that we were able to visit my mother and extended family. It was not the best time to go, but my wife is returning to the States for the birth of our first child and we realized that this trip had to be taken before the trip to the States.

A couple of churches invited me to preach while was home. I was able to preach in only two churches (one church that experienced a revival and my home church). The Lord blessed the preaching as the people of God were edified and encouraged. Once again I saw how God's grace is made perfect in our weakness.

The second trip was longer and more difficult as I had to travel alone and leave my wife in Brasov. Being that the trip was a hard one, I could not expose Trisha to such a long time of being away from home as thetemperatures were very cold. Most of the time it was below freezing. So I had to be well dressed. I was invited to preach in an evangelistic service in the city of Resita. The pastor is a good friend and a man that I highly respect. HeartCry is also in partnership with this church in supporting missionary Zoran M. in Serbia. I delivered a sermon on the condition of a lost person. I felt God's power over me. I was particularly glad that I was able to prepare this message in prayer and fasting before the Lord.

After the days in Resita, I continued my trip to visit a HeartCry missionary in the Southern part of Romania. He is a Gypsy missionary, planting a church in the city of Strehaia. When I arrived there, six HeartCry missionaries joined me in doing street outreach for the next two days. We went on the streets preaching to people and inviting them to come for an evangelistic service at the Culture House. We witnessed to hundreds of people on the street. There were two evangelistic evenings in the city. A good number of people came to listen to the proclamation of the Gospel. I preached one message and also preached a second message in the church of the town of Carceni. The Lord continued to bless the preaching and people received very well God's Word. Driving long distances gave me the opportunity to pick up people that were hitchhiking. I shared the Gospel to a women whose name was Cornelia. She listened, but did not seem to receive the Word. I prayed that the seed will somehow work in her heart. Then I picked up a man called Nelu. I had about one hour to explain the Gospel to him. This time was different as he came up with questions and interested in knowing spiritual things. I dropped him off in Sibiu and gave him a book with a good presentation of the Gospel (Ultimate Questions). He wanted to say something, but he could not. He tried again, but his voice was not able to articulate any word. After a couple of seconds, he said how touched he was in his heart that he could not even say a word at the end. He was so overwhelmed by God's love and mercy for him that he was on the verge of crying. He thanked me with visible sincerity and promised to call me once in a while. God works in mysterious ways! Pray for Nelu!

The work in Brasov visibly grows from month to month. We have around 25 people now in our meetings. We continue to meet on Sunday nights and see that those who attend feel God's presence among us. We were blessed to see that we need to buy more chairs and think how to reorganize the room so that we can host all these people. We continued to have prayer meetings and a Bible study on Tuesday nights. The youth meetings have brought new young people that do not know the Lord: Bentza, Toma, Alex, Adi, Sebi.

My wife loves to have people at our table. So we have had at least twice a week new occasions to invite people for lunch or dinner. This is a wonderful opportunity to evangelize the unsaved and to build relationships with the saved people. We have had three couples that do not know the Lord and more Christian brothers and sisters. At times we had ten to twelve people at once.

As we meet in an apartment we felt that we might have problems with our neighbors. I talked with my wife to try to make the first move. Trish made a nice cake and we went to their door. They were nice and invited us in. We thanked them for being patient with us and invited them for dinner. They accepted our invitation and came with their two children. We had a wonderful meal which gave me the opportunity to share the Gospel with them. I was very precise in the way I explained, but they seemed reserved in having a dialogue. They listened with respect, but they did not interact too much. Their names are Sandu and Gaby. Please pray for them. We want to invite them to a service sometime.

We continued our mercy ministry. I gave two bags of food to a woman called Sandra (that had a speech handicap) and to another lady called Selma. Selma is a Hungarian lady that lives from begging. She has had a sad life. She shared with me about her daughter who lost both of her children. She had another daughter who was killed by her husband. Her boy got hooked up with the Mafia who shot him in the head. After losing both children her daughter attempted suicide by drinking caustic soda. Selma found her on time, and took her to the hospital. Each time I visit Selma shares something from her life. It is interesting when I went a couple of times to take food and help her with some paper work that I never invited her to church. I gave her a New Testament in Hungarian, and I asked her if she read and she said that she reads the Word. Last time I visited her she said she wants to come to church. I will take her to a Hungarian church. Pray for her.

We are grateful for your love and support for the cause of the Kingdom.
