The following is a transcript of a video giving an overview of our work in Asia. You can find the corresponding video and more coordinator updates under the "Updates" section.
We're currently working in six Asian countries, scattered throughout South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Most of you have probably heard this before, but HeartCry's main purpose and constant motivation is that God's Name be great among the Nations and that the Lamb receive the full reward of His suffering. In the next couple of minutes I want to briefly discuss some ways in which we practically try to fulfill this purpose in Asia.
Several years ago I was in Myanmar, a country in Southeast Asia. I had been there for several weeks and was getting very discouraged because as I looked around me all I saw was idol worship. Myanmar's people are predominantly Buddhist and throughout the country there are literally millions of Buddhist temples and pagodas. One evening I had gone to the top of a small mountain to pray. There was also a pagoda at the top of the mountain and some Buddhist monks were sitting before a statue of Buddha, chanting the ancient Pali text. Like the Apostle Paul in Athens, my spirit was provoked within me and I cried out to God in prayer, "Father, You say in Your word that You do all things for your glory. But, I see nothing of Your glory in this place. All I see is idolatry! Will you please glorify Your Name in this pagan land."
The next day I went to a small house church in a village. There, during the church service, I felt as if the Lord answered my prayer. I saw Burmese people praising and worshiping Jesus Christ. In the congregation was an elderly Burmese man who had spent the majority of his life driving a rickshaw and praying to Buddha. But, he had come to faith in Christ and I saw him dance before the Lord in worship. As I watched these people I felt as if the Lord was telling me, "I am glorifying myself in this place! I am making my Name great through these people that you are seeing with your very eyes!"
And so it is throughout all Asia. God is making His Name great through men and women who, in the world's eyes, are weak and insignificant. But, to God they are more precious than gold. I've found that many of the missionaries we work with have profound spiritual giftedness. They are people with godly character and the anointing of the Holy Spirit is obvious in their preaching and evangelism. But, for the most part, they lack solid foundational doctrinal teaching, especially in the areas of Biblical and systematic theology. ÂÂ
It's often said around the HeartCry office that "we need to see what we have in our hands that our brothers and sisters don't have and we need to do everything we can to get it to them." In Asia, along with supporting the work of the ministry, the primary resource that we have to give to our Asian brothers in sisters is theological education. Currently, we're trying to accomplish this through a few different means, including sending pastors and teachers over for seminars on theological topics, distributing literature, and translating literature into our missionaries' indigenous languages.
In Matthew 20:25-28 Jesus said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your s ervant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
In trying to follow Jesus' example in mission, HeartCry is nothing more than a servant to men that God has raised up to extend His kingdom in Asia. Please pray for us that in the coming days and years that we will be able to be better servants for our brothers and sisters in Christ.
