It had been more than twenty hours since I left the Himalayan foothills to descend into the Ganges River plain. Laying in my sleeping berth at the top of the train with sweat rolling down my face, I was in prayer preparing myself for my destination. I was traveling to Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, in order to see what God was doing in the midst of darkness. In the New Testament we see that on his missionary journeys, Paul the apostle was not naive about the spiritual darkness of the places where he was taking the Gospel. Rather than ignoring the idols that captivated the hearts of his hearers, Paul observed (Acts 17:16) the satanic means through which men were blinded and kept from "seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ." To followers of Jesus, blatant idolatry is one of the most hideous things that can be seen. It is no wonder that when in Athens it says Paul's "spirit was provoked within him." Like those in Daniel's day, when confronted with idolatry, he stood firm and took action. He opened his mouth and proclaimed the Good News of a crucified and resurrected Messiah. In our day, also, there's no room for us to ignore the demon inspired realities which hold sway over the world and are so acutely visible in places like Varanasi. I've found in my own life that when I've been confronted with these realities, like Paul, my spirit has been provoked within me and the Holy Spirit has placed a burden upon my heart. This burden has led to action and fueled my desire to see Jesus Christ worshipped in the hearts of all people.

The month that Yulianus Abarude and I visited the Western Mamberamo, part of a swampy jungle expanse half the size of Great Britain, I stepped on a death-adder, was threatened with arrows, and had to be pulled out of waist deep mud by two men after I sunk and stuck while crossing a drying swamp. We trekked for 12 hours a day, days on end, through a dripping green expanse (a region of blank topography reading, “Relief Data Not Known” on the charts). We developed rashes where our packs rubbed our shoulders and we drank filtered water straight from fetid swamps. My toes poked out of the front of my shoes, the sole of my right shoe eventually tearing away completely. The toenail on my left big toe simply fell off one day. And boy did we stink! A sickly-sweet odor, I think we may have been fermenting.

Would you please be in prayer for my family and me. We just arrived in Singapore yesterday and will be here for three more days. While here I'll be preaching and sharing about HeartCry at Shalom Church (www.shalomrb.com).
After leaving Singapore, we'll be traveling to Indonesia for about 6-7 weeks. God is opening the door for us to move there and most of our time this summer will be spent further seeking the Lord's will about the move, and spending time with Asih Pamitran and some American missionary families whom we've gotten to know.
In August, Brother Paul is traveling to Asia to meet up with us. First, he will be in Indonesia, then we will all travel to India together to meet with all the men and women HeartCry partners with in South Asia.
Prayer Requests: 1. Our sons are having a difficult time adjusting to the time difference. Elliot, our infant, has a fever and may be sick. 2. Preaching at Shalom Church on July 11 and in Jakarta on July 17-19. 3. My wife and I are in need of discernment and an enlarged burden for the people of Indonesia. 4. There are several families from the USA who are either in the process of moving to Indonesia, or are strongly considering it in the future. Ask that the Lord would make their paths straight. 5. Pray also for Paul as he travels and spends time with the missionaries in Asia. |
