Dear Friends,

Thank you for your constant prayers for us.

We had a good church meeting on Sunday April 3, with members’ discussing issues openly, maturely, sincerely, and without any malice. In the members, there was a sense of ownership of the church programs and responsibility of church activities like I have never seen before. What touched my heart was that at the end of the meeting, a member recognized and thanked the pastors for their hard work and faithfulness, urging us to keep up the good spirit. This is the first time we have received a thank you for our ministry. Amongst many things agreed upon in the AGM were:

1.    The church to donate 15 seats for Oyugis congregation. Since Sam of Oyugis came for the meeting, he took the 15 seats immediately with him back to Oyugis.

2.    The men of the church undertook to buy a PA system to be put in the library for nursing mothers during service. They also planned to purchase an overhead projector to enable us sing more songs, including songs in Swahili.

3.     The ladies undertook to improve the ladies fellowship to greater heights.

4.     An exciting event was agreed upon: a family conference on December 8-9. Details will be worked out later, but the church, in collaboration with Eldoret (Naphtally) and others, will plan for the success of this. We plan to invite up to 200 people.  Pray for the logistics.

5.    Regarding finances, members urged one another to improve and be consistent in their giving; however, no program was shelved due to a lack of funds. We are to look to the Lord who is able to supply for his work.

6.    Mirunda fellowship is doing well. Simeon who takes care of the flock there now wants to come to Kisumu once in a while for training in ministry. They are now meeting in a small room costing Ksh 300/= per month (4 dollars). The church voted to pay this for them.

Do pray for our church. I see it going on the right track and the devil can strike hard sometimes, he is never happy with such progress and blessings. Soon we will vote a second deacon to help with increased need in the church in taking care of the church building. A man Stephen Ochilo has been ear-marked for this.

Yesterday, I had my first meeting with some students of Nairobi University (Kisumu campus) discussing the possibility of starting a Bible study with them. They are more than willing to start any time we are ready. We are scheduled to begin next Wednesday, April 13. On Saturday, this week, we will be at Maseno University for our regular bi-monthly Bible study. I hope our car will behave itself on the way.

On a different note, through God’s providence He has brought to our new house (since last November) more than 25 young lads between 8-13 years who play football in a nearby field. We have started Sunday evening Bible study with them. I wrote to their parents showing my intention with their kids and 20 replied saying that they have no problem with someone teaching their kids the things of God. We had our first session yesterday in our house at 6 pm after arriving from the church meeting.  I bought a football for them as an incentive. Now they want a soccer uniform! Each Sunday at 6 pm they gather at my house for the word of God and juice refreshment- they love it! There is great opportunity here for the Gospel, even amongst the youths.

Rains have come and we have now planted maize, sorghum, peas, etc. in our small plot in the backyard. Flower planting is also complete and the ground looks beautiful.

With love,

Sam and Melly

Dear Friends,

This last month the Lord has not only met us at the point of our need, but He has done more than we could ask or imagine. We are grateful for your prayers. The
Lord truly has heard and answered.  We now will give you some report on how the
Lord is working among us to the end that you may continue to pray wisely for us.

Preaching & Teaching:
I have been preaching a series on Sunday mornings from Genesis chapters one to ten. I hope to preach on chapter eleven this Lord’s Day after which, I will switch over and preach from the New Testament for some time. For Adult Sunday Bible class, I have been teaching through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians which we finished a few weeks ago. I am now conducting a short series on the life of Peter the apostle. We have so far seen and benefited from two main points. On the one hand, we see Peter’s faith, love and obedience showing that he indeed was converted. On the other hand, we have seen that he went through a sanctification process. He was once a rough man, full of himself and gradually God’s grace transformed him to a sensitive shepherd of God’s flock.

Worship service & Prayer Meeting:

We are encouraging two brothers in the church to exercise their gifts. Julius and Nicholas are very encouraging and faithful among the men. They lead the first part of the worship service before I preach. They are also participating at our Prayer Meetings by expounding the Word for about fifteen minutes. We are seeing very good signs of growth and improvement in them. However, they each go through challenges for which we ask your prayers. Julius, who has four young children, is unemployed. His wife’s name is Millicent. His sister-in-law who has a small baby also stays with them. With all this, there is a temptation for him to move to another town in search for a job. Nicholas is a college student and is soon sitting for his final exams, and he too will be thinking of relocating. Please pray for them.

Ladies fellowship & Men’s Breakfast:

While Helida meets with ladies on Thursday afternoons, I conduct ‘Men’s Breakfast’ on Saturday mornings from seven thirty to eight thirty. These meetings take place once every month. Of late, we have been dealing with the topic of church based evangelism. This is aimed at showing the members that evangelism is for all in the church and not just the pastor.

Visiting and contacts:
Over these past turbulent months, it became urgently needful to visit the members and others in the congregation in their home settings. So with Helida and occasionally accompanied by Julius and Nicholas, the visits have been very encouraging. We are trying to befriend a family where the children and their father come to worship with us occasionally. I have a contact, Mr. Elphas, whose life is being ruined by alcohol. I am seeking to witness to him. Please, pray for his conversion. Finally, it is our desire and plan to make meaningful inroads into institutions of higher learning within Eldoret.

Children Ministry:

While many of our children are still away in boarding schools and are expected back by this weekend, a sizeable number have been taken away from our church by those who have moved away. Our Sunday school and Saturday Kids’ Club continue well though with small numbers attending.  We are planning to run a Holiday Bible Club next week. Please pray for both the children and the members who will be involved. Tim: Our son is on his last few months at Atlantic College and is about to take his final exams. He had wished to join a UK University but this is not possible. Canada is the possible alternative. He has sent applications to various Universities there.

My studies:

The Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology (NEGST) at which I am taking my studies by extension in Eldoret, last month received
its full University status. It is now called Africa International University (AIU). During these three weeks April Interterm, I am receiving instructions in
NT Theology and NT Greek (Intermediate 4). I am very grateful to the Lord as He has enabled me to pass all the courses done so far. Thank you for your interest in us and the Lord’s work here.

By His grace alone,

Naphtally & Helida.

Dear Praying Friends,

Once again we are in a thanksgiving mood as we reflect on the goodness of the Lord to us at Grace Baptist Church. On Saturday 1-5-2010, a congregation of about 150 people gathered to witness the opening of the new church building. Pastor Sukesh from Kawangware, Nairobi and Naphtally of Eldoret church officiated. The atmosphere was lovely and filled with thanksgiving.  The program began with hearty singing by the congregation. The church ladies formed a wonderful choir thanking God for his goodness in not only in providing the Son for our salvation but also in his general faithfulness in all that we need for life and service to him.

Dear Praying Friends,

‘Then Job replied to the Lord: ‘I know that you can do all things, no plan of yours can be thwarted.’ (Job. 42:1). First, we cannot understand his ways. Also, we cannot thwart his plans - they come to pass.

The Lord’s church continues to grow under the great gates of Hades, but we are confident that it will come to its full maturity. Then, we will go home to rest. What a joy to know that his plan for the church militant is working out and one day we will fully join with the church triumphant when the last trumpet call of the Lord shall sound. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling’ (2 Cor.5:2). Also, we enjoy the warmth and encouragement of fellow soldier's in this glorious battle.

Dear praying friends,

Greetings to you in the name of our gracious and patient Lord and Saviour. Even after our Lord had been with His disciples for three years and had taught them many truths, they revealed a slowness in understanding. But the most encouraging thing is that He was understanding and patient with them. He still genuinely counted them as His friends and His very own whom He had chosen.

We are grateful for your continued prayers. The Lord continues to lead us as a church though, as we have mentioned in the past, a number of our members have left Eldoret. While their moving is a great loss to us, a few things are true and for which we thank the Lord. By their testimonies, we know they belong to the Lord. From what they have been taught, we trust they will be able to uphold truth and resist falsehood.
