REPORT FROM KAFUE REFORMED BAPTIST CHURCH
BI-WEEKLY REPORT - 10TH TO 23RD NOVEMBER, 2008
Once again it is a joy to write this brief report, trusting that you will be able to appropriately pray for the work here, in Kafue.
1. The Week Beginning 10th to 16th November
Monday and Tuesday I was in Cape Town attending classes at Cape Town Baptist Seminary. At the end of the second day we had an examination. The classes went very well. The seminar was on the NT with a Dr Ronnie Davis. His insight on the NT was quite an eye- opener, and helped to broaden my approach to the NT as a whole. The final exam was an open book exam. One who had done his reading would not complain. I am indebted also to my hosts, Mr and Mrs G., whom I stayed with from Saturday to Tuesday.
I also had the rare privilege of preaching during the evening service, in Goodwood Baptist Church, the church that my hosts attend. Their pastor, during my first visit in June, had promised to give the pulpit the next time I would be there. He said it was on account of the good preaching he had heard from other Zambians who had preached in his church.
On Wednesday I flew back to Zambia and was picked at the airport by one of our leaders here in Kafue. So I did not have to spend a night in Lusaka. Thursday, we had our leaders meeting to prepare for our Quarterly Business Meeting (QBM), on Saturday. This time around all the leaders had their reports ready. Friday, I was back in class at our Pre-school College, preceded by devotions. We still have only three students, though only two of them will sit for the exams. Pray that these two students will clear their exams, as this will help market the college.
In the afternoon of Friday I went to check on one of our baptismal candidates, Mr S., the blind man who has been coming to church for a year now. He has missed lessons on account of lack of transport. He says we should arrange to have the lessons at his home so that he can catch up with the lessons he has missed.
Saturday I chaired the QBM. The meeting went well, and was fairly well attended. The members were reminded of the relationship with KBC, in view of the 8 years of the existence of the church. It was also encouraging to note that the giving had gone up compared to the last quarter. Pray that this will continue. In the afternoon, I was part of a team of four that went for outreach in the Shimabala area. We did this to try and follow up those who have been coming to the meetings we normally hold in this place.
It was encouraging to see the old man in whose home we meet join us in this effort together with his daughter. This is a vernacular work. On Sunday I was back in the pulpit, and the attendance was not so good. He same was also true in the afternoon in Shimabala. I still need to do a lot of follows of those who have slackened.
2. The Week beginning 17th to 23rd November.
Tuesday, afternoon I was visited by a young lady I had briefly met with a certain young man. She said she needed prayers on account of her recurring stomach pains. We sat outside as I tried to probe her salvation and counsel on prayer. I promised to pray for her but urged her to be much in prayer herself. Her name is Annie M.. She could be a Christian.
Wednesday, I was in attendance at our monthly pastors fraternal, held at Pastor C.'s home in Kabanana. We had a timely reminder by Dr S. on the do's and don'ts of Evangelistic sermons. The discussion brought out the fact that one can preach and we should preach Christ virtually from any portion of scripture. In the evening of Wednesday I led our weekly prayer meeting. I am still sharing exhortations from the book of Ezra, now in chapter 9. This particular one was well attended, especially that for the first time we had a Mr Phiri D., a man who has for sometime being attending church and appears to be a seeker. Pray for this man, who is from a JW background, but appears to be keen on coming though once in a while when I have visited him I have found him reading the JW literature. May the Lord open his eyes to see the errors and the beauty of Christ in the Gospel he hears Sunday by Sunday.
Thursday, afternoon, I took time to distribute our monthly bulletin to a few people in town. Two people caught my attention. One, a young man, selling in a shop in town, asked that I give another one. I had given him one for the previous month, which he was able to recount to me. So I have given him another one, praying that the Lord may speak to him through this brief literature. Another is a young man by the name of Mulala, who promised to come to church after inquiring where we meet. Please pray for these two young men, that the Lord speaks to them concerning Christ.
Saturday, I was at the Preachers' College, lecturing Greek to first-year students. Only two showed up. We went ahead to revise and do one new topic. This was apparently the last lecture for this year. In the afternoon, I rushed back to Kafue to be in attendance at a couple's fellowship that was being held at our home.
Our Sunday was again not well attended, though two of our members who have been irregular were in attendance. The Holy Communion in the afternoon was fairly well-attended, with all the regulars being in attendance. Pray for our Sunday attendance, that as I visit those who have been irregular, the Lord may speak to them concerning the importance of the Lord's day.
AMEN K.Sunkutu Pastor
